A DISCUSSION OF THE EFFECTS OF ELECTRONIC SCREENS ON YOUNG PEOPLE
with Dr. Victoria Dunckley
Over the past two decades, nearly every measure of young people’s wellbeing has declined. Rates of anxiety, depression, ADHD symptoms, and motivational struggles have risen, alongside growing loneliness and social isolation. Between 2007 and 2021, suicide deaths among 10- to 24-year-olds increased by 62%. Increasingly, researchers and practitioners are pointing to a clear culprit: interactive screen use—especially smartphones—plays a significant role in this downward trend. Are screens a key reason so many young people are struggling to flourish? And is it time for parents and schools to change course?
Join us for a discussion with Dr. Victoria Dunckley, a psychiatrist with over a decade of experience working with young people and their families to reverse the negative effects of screens on their lives. Dr. Dunckley will explore the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems caused by excessive screen use, especially on young people, and discuss why the month-long “screen detox” she leads her patients through has been so successful in reversing these effects.
