Athletics

Participating in sports is not only fun but can also help provide valuable lessons in honor, respect, teamwork, camaraderie, and sacrifice. At Trinity Academy, we encourage athletic participation.

A smaller school setting offers unique benefits to your child in athletics. Coaches can devote more personal attention to each athlete, everyone has a better chance to participate at the highest level, and the high-intensity culture of a major program is replaced by a sense of community and mutual support. Trinity Academy has a no-cut policy for all of its athletic programs. We encourage an approach to athletics that makes participation a part of a balanced life with time for homework, family time, and leisure.

Meet Coach Matt!
Meet Trinity Academy's head boys basketball coach, Matt Dumbauld.

From club teams and school squads to years of summer camps, Coach Matt has spent a big part of his life on the basketball court. One of his proudest moments? Helping lead his high school team to its first-ever state championship title.

After graduating, Matt shifted his focus to coaching. Over the years, he’s taken on roles as both assistant and head coach, gaining valuable insights into leadership, teamwork, and player development. His coaching style emphasizes confidence, collaboration, hard work—and, most importantly, fun—both on and off the court.

When he’s not in the gym, Matt’s all about family. He currently works alongside his father, helping him transition into retirement and enjoy the next chapter of life. As a proud son, brother, and uncle to seven nephews and five nieces, Matt is a natural with energetic kids and all kinds of personalities—something that makes him an exceptional coach and mentor.

Coach Matt is excited to join the Trinity Academy community and bring his passion for the game to camp this summer. Whether your player is brand new to basketball or looking to take their skills to the next level, Coach Matt is ready to help them grow—and have a blast doing it!

Matt will be assisted by Coach Josh Kim.
Josh has been serving as a boys basketball coach at Trinity Academy for the past two seasons. His love for the game began around age 10, playing pickup basketball in his church parking lot. He went on to play for his high school’s freshman team and later joined an intramural league in college.

Josh has a passion for teaching the game and believes strongly in the life skills it fosters—teamwork, resilience, and patience. Off the court, he works as an Administrative Coordinator for CBRE, enjoys playing the drums, and is always on the lookout for great new food spots to try.

If you play a sport that we don’t offer you can play at your Local Public HS. For example, right now we have several soccer players that are playing HS soccer at Roosevelt because we don’t offer the sport. There is also the option of just playing a specific sport with a local club. So that is a great option as well.

Our Thunder Athletics program is relatively young, but we continue to grow! We are confident we have good programs and coaching in place that will be a good environment for all athletes, from beginners to the most experienced. It’s an exciting time and we would love to see you at one of our games and events in the future!

If you have any questions regarding our athletic program, please email our Athletic Director nicola.ash@trinityacademyportland.org.

Go Thunder!
